SOME OPINIONS ON A VARIETY OF SUBJECTS

Why should a priest know better that we?

In my opinion, the function of the priest is a dishonest one, because he fools us and himself by taking away our capacity for judgment, thereby weakening our will power. Priests are not fully integrated in all aspects of daily life. They don’t have families and do not know the daily problems of the working man. They are completely ignorant of the pressures of holding on to a job, since they live off donations given to the church without having to account for their spending. Many priests are experiencing moral crises, questioning the very existence of God, yet they continue empty preaching which in time turns into a profession of habit.

The recent sexual abuse in the church teaches us that the dignity of the victims can be restored by the knowledge that in the near future all clergy will be honored not by the cloth they wear but by their integration into all aspects of the working man’s life, whether he be a street cleaner, a caregiver for the helpless, or the homeless. The priest's goal should be one of alleviating as much as possible the daily struggle of ordinary man, not by empty preaching but by loving that part of life which, although ugly and brutal, still demands respect and dignity for humankind. Stopping our generous donations to the clergy could help them to integrate themselves more easily into daily life. Perhaps then the clergy would begin to discover more of their humanity than their supposed saintliness.

Moreover, the rules of morality change along with our evolving wisdom. Our science professors and humanists make more valid conclusions on ethics and morality than the priests do, since their laws are based on demonstrative truth, not on variable supernatural laws.
